Eid, a day celebrated by Muslims all around the world. Do you know what is the true meaning of the word ‘Eid’? ‘Eid’ means festival or feast in Arabic. In the Islamic Calendar, there are two major Eid’s; Eid-ul-Adha and Eid-ul-Fitr. You may wonder why two Eid’s are celebrated? Both Eid’s have significant importance in Islam.
‘Eid-ul-Fitr’ means breaking of the fast. People around the world greet each other with ‘Eid Mubarak’, which means ‘have a blessed Eid’. Sweet dishes are prepared at home and gifts are given to the children and those in need. In many countries with a large Muslim population, it is a national holiday. Schools and businesses are closed so that people can spend time with their friends and family.
The other Eid, known as Eid-ul-Adha is the ‘feast of sacrifice’. It comes at the end of Hajj, an annual pilgrimage made by millions of Muslims to the holy city of Mecca. Eid-ul-Adha recalls the story of how God told Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as a test of faith. During this Eid Muslims slaughter an animal to remember Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice.
Traditionally, Eid-ul-Fitr begins at the Night of the sighting of the moon. If the moon is not visible immediately after the 29th Ramadan, then Eid is celebrated the following day. Depending on the country you’re living in, Eid is celebrated from one to three days.
There is a specific prayer for this day called ‘Eid Prayer’. Before performing the prayer, obligatory charity is given to the poor and needy, called ‘Zakat’. Eid prayers are performed in a congregation in open areas, such as; fields, mosques and community centers.
Eid-ul-Fitr even though it is an important Eid it is known as the ‘Lesser Eid’ or ‘Choti Eid’, the other Eid, Eid-ul-Adha, is known as the ‘Greater Eid’ or ‘Barri Eid’. As it celebrates the sacrifice Prophet Ibrahim was willing to make for Allah.
Eid-ul-Adha, on the other hand, is celebrated for different reasons. It honors the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son by the command of Allah. As Allah saw his obedience he provided a goat to be sacrificed instead.
In this acts remembrance Muslim’s around the world sacrifice an animal (goat or cow) in the way of Allah and it is divided into three parts. One share is for the poor, one for the relatives and one is for home. Eid-ul-Adha falls on the 10th Day of Dhul Hajj.
Typically on Eid, people have breakfast, lunch or dinner at their friends or relatives’ house. They were their best clothes and go out to celebrate this joyous occasion.
Did you know – Hillary Clinton hosted the first official Eid-ul-Fitr dinner in 1996 at the White House and after that, the Clintons continued with this tradition yearly. The tradition of hosting Eid dinners continued year after year. George W. Bush hosted one every year and Barack Obama hosted his last one in 2016.
Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha are both unique yet spiritual festivals. Muslims around the world rejoice and spread happiness. Giving gifts to the children, giving charity to those in need is what Eid is all about.
This Eid with your family, friends and loved ones, Happy Eid Mubarak, with our loving wishes.
